A good captain may be most valuable when a planned destination is declined. That quiet judgment is harder to photograph than the yacht itself, and it is exactly what our planned interview series should explore.

Editorial preview

This proposed interview series will examine the value of local knowledge, captain-led decisions and the quieter side of coastal cruising. Interviews have not yet been conducted; no real person or quotation is being represented.

What the safety framework already tells us

RYA passage planning asks a skipper to account for currents, navigational hazards, weather alternatives, daylight and crew ability. Those considerations give us a real research framework, but not a substitute for the experience of a specific captain.

An itinerary may be technically possible yet unsuitable for the people or the vessel involved. The distinction between 'possible' and 'worth doing today' deserves to be central to our future conversations.

03 / 04

Questions worth asking on the record

What is the last route change you made that guests initially disliked but later appreciated? Which local restriction most often surprises visitors? How do you explain a weather-related decision to someone who booked a specific destination? What knowledge cannot be learned from a standard route diagram?

These are proposed interview questions, not claims that someone has already answered them. The resulting article should identify captains, the dates of their interviews and the scope of their experience.

04 / 04

Why we will not invent a voice

A first-person captain's account would be more compelling than a generic article, but only if it is genuinely sourced. At this stage we can share a documented safety framework and a research agenda; we cannot truthfully narrate a day from a captain's bridge.

The Chronicle intends to build this series through recorded conversations with named professionals who agree to be featured. Until then, it remains a preview.
